Wolves travel in packs with anywhere from 7 to 30 members, depending on the region and accessibility of prey. There is a definite hierarchy in a pack, centered around the "alpha pair," who mates for life and are the only ones that breed each year. Pups are born in litters of 6 to 7, and are cared for by the entire pack of wolves. Wolves usually don't live more than 10 years in the wild, facing many mortality factors such as persecution by humans, starvation, parasites, diseases and killing by other wolves. There are only two species of wolves remaining in the world today- the Gray wolf and the Red Wolf. The Red Wolf is a smaller species that is nearly extinct in the south-central United States. While it once could be found through all of North America from the Arctic Circle to Central Mexico. The Gray Wolf is now found only in Alaska and Canada, with much smaller populations in Minnesota. There are said to be as many as 30 subspecies of the Gray Wolf, including the most genetically distinct and critically endangered Mexican Wolf.
