Overall, a good unit
A great small gps. Only two areas for improvement- The screen contrast takes some time to get used to. It should come with more maps (all the maps are roughly an additional $100 each).

Great Budget GPS
Great accuracy with nice features. It has the ability to accept Mapsource downloads from the pc. Reception under foliage is spotty. Works best with clear line of sight to the sky.

Can't beat it for the same price.
If you've got $600-$1000 to spend on a GPS/Navigator, then don't even think about the Legend...but, if you want *most* of the features found on a higher-end GPS, for under $200, then do not hesitate...buy a Legend. Small yet outstanding resolution! The ONLY part that I can complain about is that it draws straight lines between wypts on routes, instead of 'snapping' to roads only...But with MapSource sftwre it's not really an issue. Overall, it's an OUTSTANDING handheld!

I would like to recommend this product
We have used this GPS for several years and would recommend it to anyone. It's waterproof and works well. We use it on our ATV trips in some large forests. It plots where we have been so we can back track. We mark the truck (as a waypoint) so if we want to return a different route we can either use the compass that always points at our truck (waypoint) or use the map to guide us. Very practical especially if you connect it to a laptop because the Garmin screen size is a little small and in b&w. Without the laptop maps can be hard to see without zooming way in. Also with a computer and a $80 program from Garmin you can load your GPS with differant map types with all the info you would would expect from the yellow pages and more. It's worth the price. I bought the same one for my parents and for my brother and his wife.

Slick but Tiny
I use 12k unit at work daily and teach at a com. college with an 8k unit. We have 2 handheld units at work. One is a Magellan Meridian Gold and the other is Magellan Sport Trak Pro. These two are exceptional units with large displays and easy to use. The Garmin Etrek is TINY about the size of flip face cellular phone. It has all the features and abilities of a big guy but if your buying this as a gift for fathers and grandfathers... forget about it. It has a display of about an inch by 2 inches. Keep in mind that the difference between the cheaper GPS units and the more expensive ones are: 1) Memory size and 2) Size of display. All units provide comparable features. Great unit otherwise. If it was for me, I'd have no problem with it other then in map mode it doesn't snap to roads which is kind of annoying.

better than nothing in an emergency
"...
in the woods or other heavier cover the signal is bad, how do you get a clear view of the sky under the cover of trees?
If I were to get absolutely lost I would like to have it to give myself a general sense of direction but that would be about it.... See more
