Sony's MegaStorage Changer is a Mixed Bag
Review From: NexTag Editorial Review, Apr 14, 2005
The Sony CDP-CX455 400 disc MegaStorage CD changer is an upgrade to the pre-existing CDP-CX-400. However, if it is an upgrade or not, that is left up to user preference. The CDP-CX455 can store up to 400 discs and has the capability to playback audio, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CDs. The changer features two jog dials for easy CD access and dual LCD screens that display current and next CD information. Users can take advantage of the CD-text reading feature, or manually enter CD data using a PS2 keyboard. Additional features include the ability to connect to another unit for 800-CD capacity and the ability to program the unit to play songs in various orders. Connectivity options include an analog RCA output, digital optical output, analog connection for synching units, a Control A-1II connection, and a headphone jack. Though the CDP-CX455 has many features, certain drawbacks question if it is really an upgrade to previous models. The changer comes with a cluttered remote that is not very user intuitive. Also the player does not have fast forward or rewind buttons, only skip buttons. Users do not have as many options in classifying CDs as the player lacks the "group" option found in the older CDP-CX-400. Also the player has a 20-character limit for artist and album name, which is hardly enough space for some album information, let alone genre. Manually entered information is assigned to the CD slot, so if you put in a new CD, it will retain the old information. Last but not least, the player takes a painstakingly long time to change between discs. Overall the only major feature that the CDP-CX455 has over its predecessor is the ability to play MP3 CDs. Serious audiophiles should think twice before purchasing this model, as it is a mixed bag when it comes to features and flaws.

WILL NOT PLAY COPIED CDs
Review From: GRBALKO, Jun 5, 2006
SONY REALLY HATES PEOPLE THAT COPY CDs, EVEN THOSE THAT DO NOT VIOLATE COPYRIGHTS. THIS UNIT WILL JUST HANGUP IN THE MIDDLE OF A CD, IT WILL NOT ADVANCE TO THE NEXT. THIS IS A REAL DRAWBACK.

Bought 2 and both failed within 3 years
Review From: Bob Rab, Feb 16, 2004
Bought first machine in 2000. Recently broke and not repairable. Failed to eject disc properly, causing jam and damage to other discs. Bought second machine to run in tandem in 2002. Defective out of box. Would not load all CDs, often attempting a load several times before skipping ths disc. Sony attempted repairs 3 times and failed, ultimately giving me a new replacment which works fine so far.

Excellent but quirky
Review From: cramer@phys.washington.edu, Dec 10, 2003  | See All Reviews
I bought this Sony 400-disc CD player because it plays MP3s as well as conventional CDs. I discovered, after much frustration, that it play CDs through both the optical and analog output, but MP3s only through the analog output (SONY: Why???). Now that I understand this, it works fine. All the folder and encoded ID3 tag information from the MP3 files is displayed on its display as the file plays. It is now the home for my 100 or so classical CDs, 50 pop CDs, and miscellaneous others. I plan to port my old LP records to MP3 format and use more of its huge storage capacity, (which is expandable to 2 more 400- disc units, if you wish.) It's a real bargain, once you master its quirks.
