High-Definition Camcorder, But Lacks XLR Input
Review From: NexTag Editorial Review, Apr 14, 2005
The Sony HDR-FX1 is one of few consumer camcorders with HD recording capability available for under $4,000. The HD MiniDV camcorder features three 1/3" HAD CCD imagers providing improved color quality, 1,440 x 1,080 resolution, a 3.5" LCD display, and a 12x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens. The HDR-FX1 features both high-definition and standard-definition recording, the ability to record at either 30 or 24 frames per second, and uses Sony's Super SteadyShot Optical Stabilization System to minimize shake and vibration. The camcorder's exposure modes include Manual, Automatic, Shutter-Priority, and Aperture-Priority. Also, imaging effects such as Black & White, Color, Sepia, Black Fade, and White Fade are available for creative recording. A major drawback to the HDR-FX1 is that it surprisingly lacks an XLR audio input for external audio recording, a feature commonly found in camcorders of this quality and price range. Also, though it is labeled a "consumer" camcorder, the HDR-FX1 is far too complex and expensive for a typical consumer. In general, this camcorder is best suited for advanced users who appreciate the HDR-FX1's HD recording ability and can take advantage of all its complex features.
