Its Thanksgiving, and an immigrant family is busily preparing for their celebration. This will be their first Thanksgiving in their restaurant, the New World Cafe, and they want it to be perfect. A long table has been set in the middle of the room and decorated with centerpieces featuring Pilgrims and Indians alongside dancing characters from the old country. As the turkey roasts, Grandmother peels potatoes and drops them into a pot. Everything is almost ready. But then, through a crack in the kitchen door, Tatyana and Leon see two strangers enter the cafe. Who could have left the door open? Now their Thanksgiving will be ruined! The children try to scare the unwanted customers away, but Grandmother has another idea Ed and Ann will be their guests. Debby Atwells vibrant illustrations capture the warmth and energy of the unusual Thanksgiving celebration. Like the Pilgrims and Indians who shared the first Thanksgiving, these two unlikely groups come together to discover that, as Grandmother says, \Thanksgiving door is like happy heart, opened up big and wide.\
