Amazing for study but not for the tame.
The translation: Exceptional. Article
writers and doctors quote the NIV. The
notes: Deep, fascinating. It gives a
clear, relevant to study, re-write or
a "what it means". There are also loads
(more than you could need) quotes of
parallels in the Bible from all over,
which are surprisingly clear and
relevant. On average I'd say 2in10
verses in the OT have a note (some pick
on 1 verse others talk about themes
you'd find in a passage) and 5in10 in
the NT (very insightful and shed new
light on tired verses). The notes are
not detailed enough that you learn
everything there is to know about
something as it should be, but do point
you away from misinterpretation.
Close second in line for usefulness is
the "concordance", basically a word
list. In my opinion is about 90%
complete. Probably something to do with
the list for Hebrew/Greek/Arabic? etc
words and I am looking for an English
word. Maps: Mine has eleven maps, which
I have yet to use in more depth than to
find distances between nations (there
is a very detailed index of places
where you can look up a place and it
gives you a map reference). At the back
is a short list of key people. Many
types of extras are fascinating good
like David's and Herod's family tree,
list and purposes of the seven
covenants, timeline of Paul's life.
Concordances: A huge 8 page "harmony of
the Gospels" and a 3 page "life of
Christ" in Matthew bring things into
perspective and context. There is an
indepth analysis at the start of every
book. Definitely very glad I got one.
Prices: I got mine for £32, which is
fine. If you can get it lower, do so.
Amazing for study but not for the tame.
